1. Choose a Camera

Coming soon - | 2 Compact or DSLR? | 3 Model? | 4 How Many Megapixels?

How do you choose? Do you want/need a digital single lens reflex (DLSR) or compact camera, there are so many to choose from in a massive range of prices, where do you begin?

Well, before you choose a camera I suggest you start at the End! What do you need a camera to do? Yes, ok, take pictures, yes but what kind of pictures?

What do you need to get out of your end product, the photograph and its file? Is it just for small printing up to A4 size or web use? Do you need high quality for magazine, poster or advertising cover?

Do you just want something to keep in your pocket for snapping the kids or your friends when out for a night/party. Is it just for quick snaps or a hobby or is it for semi pro or pro uses?

Ok, if you have got this far I can safely assume you might be prepared to learn a couple of things if you need to before you choose a camera.

How much do I need to know? The learning curve…

I do believe (and there is a lot of professional photographers who will disagree with this) that some people have “an eye” for “that great shot”without having fantastic technical ability. I know some pros that have trained with the best and use the best kit that just do not have the ability to get shots with that “artistic” heart and soul in them. If you think you may have that “eye”, then maybe you might want to learn a bit more and get that great shot to look even better and maybe even make money from it!

There are not many cameras on the market now that do not have a full automatic "Point and Shoot" mode on them. Most of them will also automatically turn on the flash if it’s needed as well. So why have all the other switches and modes and the user manual to send your head around in circles.

Well, sometimes we can choose a better setting than the camera on its own can choose for the conditions we are taking the photo in to get the results that we really want. You have to add a little bit of know-how sometimes to get what you want.

Before you go out and choose a camera with all the bells and whistles and more knobs and dials than a starship you have to ask yourself, "am I going to really bother to learn what they all do". I have had cameras for quite a few years now and I am still learning what some of the settings on my latest DSLR actually do! I do like to know the limitations of the piece of kit I am working with just so I know what a setting will do, just in case I need to use it.

In the main, a DSLR will have a lot more settings and modes than a pocket or compact point and shoot camera but will give you greater control over the end results of your photos but will require a much bigger learning curve.
